The health of our teeth and gums reflects on our overall health. Healthy dental practices and routines are excellent ways to keep teeth healthy, but this is only the beginning. Proper nutrition and diet are the foundations of true oral health.

Why Healthy and Strong Teeth Are Important

Healthy teeth are important as they:

  • Prevent tooth decay or cavities: Poor dental hygiene can lead to plaque buildup on the teeth. When plaque is left untreated, it can cause tooth decay over time.
  • Improve a person's confidence: Having healthy teeth can improve a person's self-esteem. It allows you to interact more confidently with others.
  • Reduce your risk of gum disease: Plaque in the mouth can harm the gums and bones that support your teeth. It can result in bleeding gums and bad breath.

How to Strengthen Your Teeth

Limit Sugary Food and Beverage Consumption

Bacteria in your mouth thrive on sugar found in your meals and beverages. They produce acids that soften and erode the enamel. Aerated soft drinks are also acidic and harm your teeth over time.

Drink Water Regularly

Saliva helps to remove food and bacteria that might cause cavities. It also protects against the effects of acidic meals. Stay hydrated to prevent dry mouth. A variety of medical problems and drugs could also cause dry mouth.

Consume Foods That Protect Your Enamel

Calcium in meals neutralizes decay-causing acids in your mouth. It also contributes to the strength of your bones and teeth. Follow a diet rich in cheese, milk, and other dairy products. If you are lactose intolerant, look for calcium substitutes.

Schedule Regular Checkups

Visit your dentist every six months for a checkup and dental cleanup to keep your teeth strong. Signs of oral diseases such as gum infection or tooth cavities can be detected early before they do significant harm.

Use Fluoride for Stronger Teeth

Fluoride strengthens your enamel and helps to retain minerals on your teeth. The American Dental Association suggests using a fluoride toothpaste as soon as your first tooth develops and for the rest of your life. A fluoride-containing mouthwash can help prevent cavities and keep your enamel firm.
