Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is an effective, safe, and commonly used option for sedation. This sedative is inhaled through a mask, and the effects wear off quickly following administration. Over 50 percent of all dental patients receive treatment using some form of sedation. When administered by a trained professional, nitrous oxide sedation is safe and effective.
Nitrous oxide sedation is often used for anxious patients who want to feel at ease during their dental appointment. This sedation option doesn’t put you to sleep, but it does help you relax and feel calm.
Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedation option. The gas is inhaled through the nose, traveling throughout the bloodstream. Nitrous oxide is combined with oxygen, so patients are able to breathe normally through their nose and mouth. Children and adults can benefit from it.
Nitrous oxide sedation is a good choice for many patients when undergoing simple tooth extraction. However, the dentist may advise against this form of sedation if you have certain health conditions. Nitrous oxide sedation is also not suitable for patients who have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Like other forms of sedation, nitrous oxide won’t put you to sleep. You remain awake but feel calm and relaxed. You can stay awake during the procedure and can speak and respond to your dentist as needed.
Nitrous oxide sedation will not cause pain. It is administered through a mask placed over the patient’s nose. Laughing gas has calming properties that relax patients. The dentist can adjust the dosage as needed.
Apart from helping patients relax during dental treatments, nitrous oxide is also useful as a pain reliever during certain procedures. During root canals, for instance, the dental team will administer nitrous oxide to keep the patient comfortable throughout the procedure.
Nitrous oxide is safe and doesn’t have any harmful side effects. Patients may feel relaxed and euphoric and also want to laugh or giggle.
